Obituary for Ira D. Sprunger
Ira D. Sprunger, age 89, died on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Wooster Community Hospital in Wooster, OH after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 02, 2010, 11:00 AM at the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, Walnut & Chestnut Sts. Orrville. Rev. Ray Pfahler will be officiating. Burial will be at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville, OH. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 1, 2010, 6-9 PM at Gresser Funeral Home in Orrville, OH. The family suggests that friends may make a donation to the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, Walnut & Chestnut Sts. Orrville, OH 44667 in his memory. He was born May 22, 1921 in Salem Oregon, the son of Omer and Ella (Amstutz) Sprunger. He married Kathleen Moore and they enjoyed 56 years of marriagee. She died on November 2, 2004. Ira and his family moved to Orrville at a very young age and he attended Orrville schools graduating from Orrville High School in 1941. He was called to duty with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving with the 123rd Infantry Regiment of the 33rd Division from 1942-1946 in the Pacific theater of operations. Upon his return from military duty, he went to work as a carpenter for D.P.King and then C.A.King. In 1966 he started Sprunger Construction and went on the build many homes and offices, such as the Orrville Chamber of Commerce. His company also did extensive home remodeling for many area homeowners. Ira was a lifetime member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where he served as treasurer, trustee, board member, and even custodian when he was young. He attended his Sunday School Class party on September 13th before his final illness. He was a member of the Orrville Lyons Club for many years, attended the Class of '41 luncheons each month and most recently joined the Kidron Historical Society and Museum. Surviving him are a son, Mitchel Sprunger of Lakewood, OH, a daughter Elizabeth (James) Fredrick of Broadview Heights, OH, sisters, Leora (David) Jones, Ruthella (Wilbur) Zimmerly, grandchildren, James Jr. (Nicole) and Andrew Fredrick, sisters in law Caroline (Donald) Hoza and Donna Sprunger, brothers in law, Edgar(Loretta) Moore, Al Daugherty, numerous nieces and nephews and a very good friend, Edith Pyers. Preceding him in death are his parents, wife Kathleen, a brother Delbert Sprunger and sisters Martha Daugherty and Dorothy Sprunger.
