Obituary for W. Ross 'Ike' Hartzler
W. Ross 'Ike' Hartzler, age 90 died on Monday, July 14, 2014 at his home near Smithville after a long period of declining health. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014, 10:00 AM at the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, Walnut & Chestnut Sts. Orrville, OH. Pastor Paul Simonson will be officiating. Burial will be at the Paradise Cemetery, N. Apple Creek Road near Smithville. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 18, 2014, 7 to 9 pm at the Gresser Funeral Home in Orrville. The family suggests that friends may make a donation to Life Care Hospice of Wayne County, 2525 Back Orrville Rd.,Wooster, OH 44691 in his memory. He was born December 22, 1923 on the family farm near Weilersville, the son of Charles Foster and Zella M, (Ferrer) Hartzler. He was a direct descendant of Jacob Hertzler, the first Old Order Amish bishop in the New World. Ross attended Smithville schools and was a 1942 graduate of Smithville High School. He married the late Grace M. Yoder and she died in 2003. Ike was a retired truck driver and a member of the Teamsters Union. He enjoyed woodworking, caning chairs and being the family handyman. He served in World War II in the last mounted cavalry (124th infantry division) of the U.S. Army. He was a member of The Mars Task Force who were responsible for opening up The Burma Road. Surviving are his sons James (Patricia), Jeffery (Vicky), Joseph, daughter-in-law Marcella, a sister, Geneva Hutchinson along with his grandchildren Jarrod, Marjike, Emily (Peter), Neal (Jonlyn), Leah and Lydia. He is also survived by numerous other members of a large family. He is preceded in death by his wife Grace (Yoder), son John and siblings Lucille, Mildred, Ruth, Joseph, Vivian, Jesse, Rhea, Arlo and Donna.
