Obituary for Sarah Jane Sommers
-- Sarah Jane Johnides Sommers, born July 20, 1930 in Yorkville, Belmont County, Ohio, to Ruth Briggs Johnides and George Johnides, Senior, passed away on March 26, 2020 after a period of declining health.
Sarah attended grade school in Yorkville, through the 5th grade, and moved to Orrville in 1941 with her parents and two brothers. Her oldest brother was in the US Navy and lost his life on a destroyer at Salerno, Italy during WW II. Sarah attended school in Orrville from the 6th grade, at the old Walnut Street School, and the 7th through 12th grades at the High School on Church Street. She was active in speech and drama, and was the first student from Orrville to go to the district for “The Prince of Peace Contest.” She graduated in 1948 from Orrville High School.
On March 5, 1949 Sarah married Darrell J. Sommers in the old Presbyterian Church on North Main Street. Darrell passed away in 2011. Sarah was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and in the early 1990’s earned the “1,000 Hour Pen” for work donated to Dunlap Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be missed by special friends Marilyn Bracken, Betty Bowers, and Frank Croskey.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheryl Kamp and son-in-law Kenneth Kamp, son Michael Sommers and daughter-in-law Penny Osborne, grandchildren, Derek and Zachary Sommers, Jordan Kamp and wife Dana Perry, Kendyl Roberts, great-grandson Jett Roberts, and sister-in-law Betty Johnides.
Preceding her in death were brothers, John, George, Paul and sister-in-law Donnalee Johnides. The family would like thank the staff of Accord Care and memorial contributions may be made to LifeCare Hospice for special care in her last year.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no calling hours or visitation. A Memorial service and burial at Crown Hill will take place at a later date to be determined by the family.
