He was born to Earl and Anna Mast Smotherman on July 22, 1949 in Orrville, OH. Attending school in Orrville, he graduated Orrville High School, class of 1967. Robert served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He was employed by Will-Burt, Shafer Valve, Rexroth as a machinist and department supervisor, and retired in 2019 from Tahoma Enterprises as a cost estimator.
Robert enjoyed attending auctions, coin collecting and watching his grandchildren play sports.
He is survived by his wife Becky Snyder, a daughter Amy Gonzales and grandchildren Ella, Abby and Anthony Gonzales, a son Matthew Smotherman and grandchildren Matthew, Sophie, Andrew and Gillian Smotherman, Also surviving are half siblings Rick and Randy Kirkbride and Debra Fischnich and stepson Timothy (Christine) Snyder and step-grandchildren Brennen, Sophia, Cole and Ella Marie Snyder.
Robert is preceded in death by his first wife Janet Hostetler Smotherman, infant daughter Beth Ann Smotherman, step-son Cary W. Snyder and his parents.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be planned at a later date to be determined by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorials may be directed to the Orrville High School Booster Club or LifeCare Hospice, 1900 Akron Road, Wooster, OH 44691.
