Patricia A Birkbeck, a beloved member of the Orrville community, passed away November 8th after a period of declining health. She was 83 years old.
Born on September 17, 1941, in Wooster, Pat was the daughter of Arthur and Daisy (Tanner) Van Zile. A lifelong resident of Orrville, she was known for her kindness, her unwavering work ethic, and her deep connection to her community. For four decades, she worked at Buehler’s in Orrville, where she became a familiar and friendly face to many. Pat, who never possessed a driver’s license, often walked to work, no matter the weather. She took pride in her independence, and the daily walk became a part of her everyday routine, just as much as the work itself.
Pat was a tireless supporter of Orrville High School athletics, often attending games and cheering on her beloved Red Riders with her signature enthusiasm. Pat’s love for her community and the youth in it, was evident in all that she did. Her support was not just about showing up for a game-she believed in giving back. Her heart was especially big during the Christmas season, when she would tirelessly shop for gifts for those less fortunate. No matter how difficult the times, Pat would find a way to spread joy and ensure the others had a very Merry Christmas. Her generosity, especially during trying times, spoke volumes about her character.
When it came to her family, Pat’s love and support was boundless. She is survived by her sons, Mike (Suzanne) of Canton and Matt (Linda) of Orrville: three grandchildren, John (Skyler) of Columbus, Mason (Breanna) of Ashland and Elizabeth of Orrville, and a great grandson, Boone Birkbeck. She also leaves behind her beloved sister, Ruby (Gerald ‘Boz’) Johnson of Toledo, and a host of dear friends who cherished her warmth and loyalty.
Pat also loved family gatherings of all occasions, her coffees with dear friends, occasional evenings of bingo and outings to local casinos.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years, Larry Birkbeck, and her brothers, Martin, Roland and Jack Van Zile.
In lieu of calling hours, funeral services will be held at Gresser’s Funeral Home in Orrville on Friday, November 15 at 12:30pm with burial services to follow at Crownhill Cemetery. As Pat’s family has requested, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the Orrville public safety forces, as well as the kind professionals at Aultman Hospital Canton, Orrville Aultman Hospital, Shady Lawn Nursing Home and InCareOhio hospice personnel, for the care and compassion shown to Pat in her final days.
Pat’s life was a testament to the simple but powerful virtues of kindness, generosity and community spirit. She may have never driven a car, but she surely knew how to drive a spirit of compassion.
Mom, we love you and will cherish the memories. You were always...”the wind beneath our wings.”
