Obituary for Norman J. Hostetler
Norman Jay Hostetler, 95, passed away Saturday evening, June 21, 2014, peacefully at his home. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, June 25 at 11 a.m. at East Chippewa Church of the Brethren, 7207 Chippewa Rd., Orrville, OH with Pastor Brad Kelley officiating. Interment will be in the Church cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday, June 24 at Gresser Funeral Home, 415 North Elm St., Orrville, OH from 6-8 p.m. or at the church one hour prior to the service Wednesday. He was born March 10, 1919 in Orrville to the late Ammon and Lena Weigley Hostetler. He was a graduate of Smithville High School and the Ohio State University with a degree in Animal Husbandry. After college, he served in Alternate Service as a Dairy Tester. After WWII, he was involved in United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Association where he selected and accompanied dairy cattle to repopulate herds in war-torn Germany, Poland and Japan. He and his wife, the former Irene McNaull, were married on June 25, 1950 in Ashland, Ohio. They would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this Wednesday. She survives. He farmed full-time until going to the OARDC in 1963 to work in the Agricultural Engineering Department until he retired in 1988.Throughout the years, he has enjoyed his volunteer work at various organizations including Heifer International, Habitat for Humanity, and People to People. He was a devoted member of East Chippewa Church of the Brethren. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters Anita (Merle) Shetler of Baltic and Lois (John) Douglass of Marshallville. Five grandchildren, Elissa (Jeremy) Page of New Philadelphia, Emily Shetler of Denver, CO, Sarah (Josh) Zimmerly, Tyler and Zach Douglass all of Marshallville; Great-Grandchildren Mia, Britton and Gabrielle Page and Karter Zimmerly. Brothers John and Homer of Orrville, and Orie of Winter Haven, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents; brothers, Wayne, Alvin, Irvin, Ammon Jr., and sisters, Marie Hostetler, Isa Gochnauer, and Fern in infancy. Memorial contributions may be made to People To People, 454 East Bowman St., Wooster, the Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
