Obituary for Margaret E. Berkey
Margaret E. Berkey went to be with her Lord on Friday March 3, 2017, two days before her 105th birthday at Smithville –Western Care Center near Wooster.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017, 11:00 AM at the Oak Grove Mennonite Church, 7843 Smucker Rd. Smithville, OH. Pastor Douglas Zehr will be officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery immediately following services.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017, 1 Hr before services at the church.
The family suggests that friends may make a donation to Oak Grove Mennonite Church for the Children’s Library Fund or to LifeCare Hospice 1900 Akron Road Wooster, OH, 44691
in her memory.
She was born at home on the farm on Canal Rd. on March 5, 1912 and graduated from Smithville High School in 1929. She was employed at the College of Wooster in the dining hall in the 1930’s and took courses at Wooster Business School. After WWII, she worked at Goodyear in Akron before relocating with her sister Edith to Cleveland, OH. She worked at several jobs before joining the Records Dept. of the Standard Oil Company for 10 years.
She was a loyal Cleveland Indians fan, witnessing the celebration of their 1948 World Series Championship! That loyalty continued for the next 70 years.
Margaret returned to Wooster to care for her aging mother. For 7 years until her retirement, she worked at the Wayne County Public Library in the Children’s Dept . and was supervisor of the Circulation Dept. She also helped part-time at Berkey Trophies, the business her brother Wilbur began in Smithville.
She was an avid reader, a member of Seekers Club from the 1930’s to the 1980’s. She enjoyed teaching the 2-3 yr. old class at Bible Study Fellowship in Orrville, OH. As a member of Oak Grove Mennonite Church, she was actively involved in its ministries including being a manager at the MCC Thrift and Gift Shop in Orrville.
Margaret cherished her 60+ nieces and nephews of several generations and considered them her immediate family. She leaves a legacy of writing and preserving a written “Berkey Family History”
Special thanks to those at Smithville-Western Care Center, who cared for her with professional excellence, love, and compassion. While there, they often witnessed her bright sense of humor.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph and Martha (Yoder) Berkey and 10 siblings. They were: Frank ( Leota), Marion (Lenore), Lewis, Wilbur (Adeline), Mabel, Edith, Edna Von Gunton (Fritz), Joseph, Jr., Roger (Alice), and Benjamin Wayne.
