Elmer was born October 4, 1927, in Fulton County, Pennsylvania to the late Norman Garthwaite (“Doc”) and Carrie (Seiders) Mellott. He grew up in a farm family, acquiring a strong, honest work ethic and learning how to “make do” during the years of the Depression.
In his 20’s, Elmer moved to Smithville, Ohio, where he met and later married Myrtle Irvin on October 11, 1952. A bricklayer by trade, Elmer built their home north of Smithville in 1960. He was employed by Bogner Construction for many years, and took great pride in pointing out the various buildings in Wooster and the surrounding area that he had helped to build.
Elmer enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, woodworking, and cutting firewood. He was a member of Paradise Church of the Brethren, Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen, National Rifle Association, and Wayne Coon Hunters Association.
Elmer is survived by his son, Wes (Jan) Mellott of Wooster and his daughter, Connie (Mike) Reding of Lakeville. Grandchildren: Jonathan (Natasha) Edwards, Bryan (Alyssa) Edwards, Buffy Edwards, Kim Welton, and Josh Lance. Great grandchildren: Kyle Welton, Kody Welton, Kendra Lance, Easton Edwards, and Elora Edwards. Brothers: Norman (Hazel) Mellott and James Mellott, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Myrtle, and his sister, Bertha Rudy.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the following gentle and caring people who helped to make Elmer’s last months more comfortable: The staff of LifeCare Hospice, the staff at Dunlap Family Physicians and Aultman Dunlap Hospital, and the staff at The Apostolic Christian Home.
