Obituary for Donald L. Hilbert
Donald L. Hilbert, age 88, died on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Altercare of Wadsworth following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 26, 2012, 2 PM at the Gresser Funeral Home, 415 N. Elm St. Orrville. Pastor Erik Swanson will be officiating. Burial will be at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville, OH. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 26, 2012, 12 - 2 PM at the funeral home prior to services. The family suggests that friends may make a donation to Wounded Warrior Project P.O. Box 758517,Topeka, KS 66675, www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate.aspx, in his memory. He was born December 3, 1923 in Hopedale, OH, the son of Chester and Mary (Graham) Hilbert. He was married to Helen O'Brien on October 10, 1946 and she died on February 23, 1994. Don was a 1940 graduate of Jewett High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He fought in the invasion of Salerno, Italy and was wounded at Cassino, Italy. For his efforts, Don was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star in combat. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 282 in Orrville, VFW Post 3382 of Akron, Disabled American Veterans of Akron, and Midwest Chapter of the 36th Infantry Division. After his military service, Don worked 15 years at the J.M.Smucker Co. in Orrville, the Redbird Hardware of Wadsworth and retired from Hardware Distributors in Bedford Heights after 28 years in the hardware business. His hobbies included traveling, bingo and attending auctions. Don was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Barberton and the Bottle Club of Wadsworth. Surviving is a son, Larry (Susan) Hilbert of Wooster, a daughter, Carla Daniels of Wadsworth, 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grand children, a brother Kenneth (Bev) Hilbert and a long time friend Joanne of Akron. Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife Helen, and a brother Dean Hilbert in 1986.
