Obituary for Dolores E. Miller
Dolores Elizabeth Miller, (nee Zimmerman) age 98, formerly of Marshallville and Ragersville, Ohio, died Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Apostolic Christian Home, in Rittman, Ohio, following a brief illness. A private, grave-side service will be held on April 26 at the Ragersville Zion United Church of Christ's Cemetery in Ragersville. There will be no calling hours at the funeral home. The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations in Dolores Miller's honor be made at the donor's choice to the Apostolic Christian Home, 10680 Steiner Road, Rittman, OH 44270, or to one of Mrs. Miller's churches: St. Michael's United Church of Christ, 22 Euclid Avenue, Marshallville, OH 44645, or Ragersville Zion United Church of Christ, 8831 Crooked Run Road SW, Sugarcreek, OH 44681. Dolores Elizabeth Zimmerman was born on May 21, 1911, the first child of Emma (Kutcher) and Harris Lewis Zimmerman, near Ragersville in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She graduated from Kent State University in the spring of 1932 with a teaching certificate and taught school that fall in a one-room schoolhouse near Strasburg. The following three years she taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades in the Ragersville school system. On November 1, 1936 she married Herman R. Miller from Dresden, Ohio. They lived in the Akron area where her husband was an engineer with both Firestone and Goodyear Tire Companies until they purchased a farm near Marshallville, around 1940. Mr. Miller was an award winning farmer and was recognized for his many farming and conservation efforts. The Millers raised their family and dairy farmed until the retirement of the dairy herd in 1977. Mr. Miller died October 3, 1996. Socially active until her early nineties, Mrs. Miller was a member of St. Michael's United Church of Christ and was active in the Ladies Church Guild, Marshallville Garden Club, Farm Bureau, and The Baughman Grange (50-year member). She enjoyed visiting with her relatives and friends in the Ragersville/Sugarcreek area. She was an avid historian and worked for years on her family genealogy, even visiting the area of Switzerland from which her Zimmerman ancestors had come. She also researched the history of the one-room schoolhouses in the local areas adjacent to Marshallville. Mrs. Miller and her husband were founding members and active in the Marshallville Historical Society. She was never far from her roots; since her ancestors were early Ragersville settlers, she also maintained an interest in the Ragersville Historical Society. Mrs. Miller was fond of gardening, and always supplied flowers for the church altar and her own home. Surviving Dolores Miller are her three children: Katherine (Larry) Izer of East Sparta, Ohio, David (Carol) Miller of Marshallville and Dene (Richard) Alden of Cincinnati Ohio; six grandchildren, Renay Miller of Colorado, Bryan (Patty) Miller of Marshallville, Jennifer (Tim) Linder of Virginia, Kim Izer of Canal Fulton Ohio, Meredith Alden Engel of Oregon and Matthew Christopher Alden of Cincinnati, and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Kyle Miller of Marshallville. A third great-grand daughter is expected in May (Jennifer Miller Linder). Preceding her in death were her husband Herman R. Miller, grandchildren Linette Denise Miller and Melissa Ann Izer, and her brothers Glenn Zimmerman of Ragersville, Moyne Zimmerman of Strasburg Ohio and Kenneth Zimmerman of North Canton Ohio.
