Ashland- Douglas E. Markle from Ashland, Ohio, age 64, died unexpectedly
on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital in
Mansfield, Ohio, from heart issues. Doug “Lou” was born on November
30, 1959, in Orrville, Ohio, to Everett L. and Shirley J. (Knotts) Markle.
Doug was fortunate to have great parents (Everett “Lou” and
Shirley Markle), grandparents (Ed and Beverly Knotts; Everett and Mary
Markle), an aunt and uncle (Pat and Wes Peterman), a brother (Kevin
Markle), and cousins (Van, Dianne, Sheri, Lana, and Vic Peterman).
Growing up, the Markle family holidays were packed with activities
involving camping, skiing, and sporting events. Doug was blessed to
have a father who coached at Ashland College and in the late 60’s,
Doug and Kevin spent countless hours in the gym, on the racquetball
courts, at Conrad Field House, and at Sarver Field. He excelled in
baseball and football throughout his youth and during his years at
Ashland High School, where his mom was his #1 fan. Doug attended
South Georgia Junior College for two years, where he played baseball
and earned his associate degree. He then attended Ashland College
where he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science.
Doug had natural skills on the racquetball court and during the
80’s and 90’s participated in numerous racquetball tournaments. He
was a two-time state champion in the men’s “B” class. As an adult,
Doug enjoyed playing slow-pitch softball in the summers and eventually
switched to playing fast-pitch softball. “Lou” could never turn down a
good buffet, a Texas hold-em poker game, or a chance to spend an
afternoon at the horse track or a casino. He enjoyed attending the
county fairs throughout Ohio to watch the harness racing events with
his close friend, Rick “Stick” Miller.
Doug worked at Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) for many
years and last worked at Lippert Enterprises. He was a member of the
Ashland Eagles Club #2178.
Doug is survived by his brother, Kevin Markle; niece, Brooke
Markle; nephew, Logan (and Lily) Markle; great nephew, Landon
Markle; and many cousins on the Peterman side of his family. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Shirley Markle.
Graveside services will be held at Smithville Cemetery on
Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jeff Messner
presiding. Gresser Funeral Home in Orrville, Ohio, is handling the
arrangements.
