Donald P. Shisler, age 89 died peacefully on Wednesday, October 05, 2016 at Smithville Western Care Center in Wooster,OH after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 10, 2016, 11:00 AM at the Chapel of the Cross U.M. Church in North Lawrence with Pastors Bob Mitchell and Ignatius David officiating. Burial will be at Newman Creek Cemetery following the services.

Friends and relatives will be received Sunday October 9, 2016 from 6 -8 PM at Gresser Funeral Home, 415 N. Elm St. in Orrville and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Chapel of the Cross U.M. Church, North Lawrence, OH 44666 in his memory.

Don was born July 21, 1927 in Dalton, Ohio, son of Ray and Fanny(Plank) Shisler. He graduated from Dalton High School in 1945. He farmed all of his life and was a driver for Orrville Milk, Borden’s, and Smith Dairy until retirement in 1994. He sold seed corn for many years while he owned and operated the family farm in Baughman Township until his recent health decline. He also showed corn at the Baughman Corn Show and the Wayne County Fair, winning numerous awards over the years. He was a member of the Marshallville Lions Club, Wayne County Farm Bureau, Baughman Grange (life member) and an active member of Chapel of the Cross United Methodist Church in North Lawrence, teaching Sunday school classes and serving many leadership positions over the years. He also served as president of the trustees of the Newman Creek Cemetery.

He never met a stranger and some say he missed his calling to be a salesman. He had many friends and truly enjoyed sharing life with others. He loved to travel, loved flowers, and playing cards with friends. After retirement from Smith Dairy, Don and his wife Letha had many memorable vacations over the years traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Scandinavian countries with the Orrville Fun Group. The couple would have been married 62 years on October 31.

He is survived by his loving family: wife Letha (Schmucker), daughter Kathy of Akron, sons Scott (Susan) of Waukee, Iowa and Doug (Tina) of Smithfield, Virginia. He also leaves behind his brother Gene, and sisters Betty, Esther, Mabel, and Pauline. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Tommy, Drew, Jack, and Max of Iowa.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Laura, and a brother Wayne.

The family would like to thank the nurses and hospice care personnel at Smithville Western and LifeCare Hospice for the excellent care given to Don during the last couple months.
Also a special thank you to neighbors Phil and Diana Simmons for all they did to help Don during the past year.
